Holidays in Palma

Palma is Majorca’s capital city. It is a very busy lively place with a population of over 380,000 people, situated right on the south coast of Majorca it is also the island’s main port, and of course with the bay of Palma here, there are plenty of beaches to relax on locally too. Add to this that there is plenty to do and see locally, and you’ve got the ideal vacation spot. There are lots of hotels in the area, some right in town, others facing onto the beautiful white sanded beaches here, and they offer a wide range of rooms to suit most tastes and pockets.

Shopping
Palma is a great place if you want to do a bit of holiday shopping. The main shopping area is Jaume III where you’ll find lots of great stores selling plenty of fashionable clothing and jewellery. The side streets surrounding this area, have lots of smaller shops in them, where you can find a good range of items from antiques to hand made local crafts, and La Rambla is the local flower market which is worth a visit just for the amazing amount of flowers you can see and smell here even if you’re not looking to buy any.

Eating Out
Through out Palma, you’ll find lots of terrace cafes, where you can enjoy a light lunch or a drink and a snack. El Terreno is where you’ll find some of the best restaurants, but there are many others around the city too. In many, as well as tapas, the specialty is fresh seafood caught locally, although you’ll generally find plenty of non seafood dishes on the menus too.

Nightlife
Palma may not be the best known place on the island for nightlife, but the El Terreno area of the city is pretty lively at night, and there are quite a number of clubs and bars here where you can dance through till the early hours if you wish.

Sightseeing
The city has many well known landmarks that as a visitor you may enjoy seeing, from it’s great Gothic cathedral dominating the waterfront, to the Bellver castle which is now home to the local history museum as well as a museum of art and sculpture.

One of the best ways to view some of the more important sights around Palma is to use the Palma City Sightseeing Bus. This stop and ride bus has 16 stops around the city, so you can hop on and off it dropping in at the various different attractions along the way. It leaves every 20 minutes, and if you want to take the full tour it begins at the Avda Antonio Maura, travels through Paseo del Bourne to Juan Carlos I, and then into the city centre to the Plaza Espana which is the transport hub of the city.
