Cruises around the Mediterranean (Majorca)

The Mediterranean is a unique place, and has a wonderful combination of mild and pleasant climate, beautiful coastline, rich history and diverse culture. Visiting the Mediterranean is a wonderful opportunity therefore, to experience a wealth of cultural diversity, and to get a glimpse of many different nations.

There are over 200 islands to explore, from the Greek Ionian and Argosaronic Islands, to the Cyclades, Crete and the Sporades. Italy’s Capri, Sicily and San Pietro, Spanish islands such as Corsica and Majorca, as well as the larger islands of Cyprus, Malta and Tunisia can all be found here.

One of the best ways to experience some of these many and varied island cultures, is by cruise. You could spend many months travelling around on a Mediterranean Cruise visiting all the islands there, without ever touching on the same port twice, but even a short trip can allow you to experience some of the more popular places.

One of the best known islands has to be Majorca, it’s one that many cruise ships will stop at on their journey, and there is a lot there to be seen during any excursions you might take. There is the fine gothic cathedral at Palma, or the caves of Drach on the east coast. You could even take a trip on the Soller train through the Serra de Tramuntana mountains where you can see almond, lemon and orange groves, and enjoy the beautiful scenery and views.

On Corsica, nature is the theme for the day. The regional national park of Corsica covers about 40% of the island, and there is plenty to see on a trip through the park. Alternatively, you could take a trip to Ajaccio, a small but vibrant city where you can see the 16th century Ajaccio cathedral, a triumvirate of Genoese towers, and the birth place of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Capri is a steep sided island that is very beautiful, and there are many sights to see here. The blue grotto, a sea cave where the sunlight shines through an underwater cavity and reflects through the sea onto the walls of the cavern making it appear blue is beautiful to see. The Villa San Michele, which was built around the turn of the 20th Century on the ruins of the villa of the Roman Emperor Tiberius. Its gardens give panoramic views of the area and the whole villa sits atop a ledge at the top of the Phoenican steps 327 metres above sea level. A number of relics and works of art dating back to ancient Egypt can be found in the gardens here.

Visiting Crete, you’ll find an island of great variety. There are three mountain ranges, and five Minoan palaces at Knossos, Phaistos, Agia Triada, Malia and Zakros all of which are well worth seeing. The archaeological museum at Iraklion is impressive, and the cave of Eileithyia mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey is quite amazing to see. (According to legend, Eileithya was born to Hera inside this cave). The cave actually holds proof that it was used right from the Neolithic period until at least the late Roman times, and there’s also evidence of early Christian worship going on here.
